Situated at the south-western tip of Europe, at a latitude of 36°8'N and a longitude of 5°21'W, Gibraltar has an area of 6.8 km² (2.6 sq mi) and a shoreline measuring 12 km (7.5 mi) in length. Gibraltar is a peninsular that is surrounded by 80% water and located adjacent to the well-known Strait that takes its name. It is a unique geographical location where it is possible to see three countries (Gibraltar, Spain and Morocco) and two continents (Europe and Africa) just by driving or walking from the northern side to the southern side of Gibraltar.
Gibraltar’s most prominent feature is undoubtedly the ever-imposing and dominating mass of limestone internationally known as the mighty Rock of Gibraltar. This limestone rock, which makes it one of the most unique sites on Earth, has a height of 426 metres (1,398 feet). Most of the Rock's upper area consists of the Upper Rock Nature Reserve, home to Gibraltar's famous Barbary Apes, as well as an abundance of flora and fauna. Gibraltar, moreover, is a popular stepping stone for a vast array of migratory birds, making it a hot-spot for those enticed by ecological pursuits.

Gibraltar relishes from a pleasant Mediterranean climate, with warm summers and mild winters. During the summer months, the temperature occasionally exceeds 30ºC, while in winter the temperature can drop to a low of 10ºC at night. Gibraltar generally experiences an average of 830 mm of rainfall a year, largely during late winter and early spring time.
